Breast cancer can be broken down into two types: non-invasive and invasive.
Non-invasive breast cancer
Non-invasive breast cancer is when the abnormal cells haven’t spread from the milk producing glands or ducts. These tumors can’t usually be felt by your doctor and instead are most frequently identified by routine mammography. Types of non-invasive breast disease include:
- Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS)
- Lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS)
Invasive breast cancer
Invasive forms of breast cancer have spread beyond the milk ducts into other nearby tissues of the breast. Types of invasive breast cancer include: · Infiltrating ductal carcinoma (IDC)
- Infiltrating lobular carcinoma (ILC)
- Inflammatory breast cancer (IBC)

Breast cancer is the abnormal and uncontrollable growth of the cells lining the breast lobules or ducts. These cancerous cells have the potential to spread, or metastasize, to lymph nodes near the breast or other distant parts of the body, such as the liver, lungs, bones, or brain.

The American Society of Breast Surgeons recommends having a discussion with your primary care provider to discuss breast cancer screening beginning at age 40. For women who have a strong family history or heritable genetic mutation (ie, BRCA 1 or 2), screening should start earlier than 40. Talk to your physician about what screening options are appropriate for you.
Should you need access to mammography and diagnostics, GenesisCare is proud to offer several comprehensive Women’s Centers, which provide end-to-end care from initial screening to diagnosis, through treatment planning and post-treatment follow-up. We know that when you have cancer, time and access to the most innovative treatment options matter. View our list of locations to find a Women’s Center near you.
Breast cancer treatment
In general, breast cancer treatment typically includes a combination of therapies, such as breast surgery, medical therapies (chemotherapy, hormone-blocking therapy, and/or immunotherapy) and radiation therapy. We offer all three specialties in our practices across the nation.
Our expert team of breast surgeons are specially trained in surgical removal of benign (non-cancerous) and malignant (cancerous) tumors of the breast. There are different procedures used for breast cancer surgery and your surgeon will recommend the most appropriate one for you depending on what type of breast cancer you have and how advanced it is.
At GenesisCare, we offer the following breast surgery options:
- Lumpectomy
- Oncoplastic breast surgery
- Mastectomy
- Nipple- and skin-sparing techniques

At GenesisCare, we offer a wide range of systemic drug therapies and the latest anti-cancer medications for the treatment of breast cancers, including:
- Chemotherapy
- Hormone or endocrine therapy
- Immunotherapy
- Targeted therapy

Radiation therapy is often administered after breast cancer has been removed. At GenesisCare, we use the latest-generation machines to deliver highly targeted radiation beams. The accuracy of these treatments, together with the expertise of our teams, helps our patients achieve the best possible outcomes. Our radiation treatment options include:
- External beam radiation therapy (EBRT)
- Accelerated partial breast irradiation (APBI)
- Intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT)
- 3D-conformal radiation therapy (3D-CRT)
- Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT)
Additionally, many of our centers offer an advanced AlignRT® technology a cutting-edge technology for surface guided radiation therapy (SGRT) with precise planning software and unique body positioning technologies, that enables:
- Unprecedented accuracy and efficiency using 3-dimensional stereo camera units and skin surface tracking to detect slight movements; it automatically pauses treatment if you shift during the session
- Tattoo-free treatments, which means you won’t have a permanent physical reminder about your treatment
- A reduced risk of side effects by precisely delivering radiation to the tumor while motion management ensures doses to surrounding healthy tissue are limited
- Deep Inspiration Breath Hold (DIBH), an innovative technique that helps to move the heart away from the left breast during radiation therapy, dramatically reducing potential cardiac complications

Clinical trials examine how people respond to a new treatment and help identify possible side effects, while others compare existing treatments, test new ways to use or combine existing treatment, or observe how people respond to other factors that might affect their health. If you participate in a clinical trial, you may be one of the first to benefit from some of the latest treatment offerings, as well as open the door to new treatment pathways for future patients. Talk to your doctor to see what clinical trials are available to you.

GenesisCare has partnered with PreludeDx to offer DCISionRT®, which combines the latest innovations in molecular biology to deliver the most advanced Ductal Carcinoma in Situ (DCIS) test available. It is the first biological risk signature developed specifically for DCIS patients and the only test that predicts if you may benefit from radiation therapy. The test looks at the biology of your specific cancer using a comprehensive molecular assessment and determines the risk of your DCIS returning as well as predicting whether you will benefit from treatment.
Your DCISion Score provides valuable information that can be used to help guide your treatment plan with the goal of driving better outcomes. Advanced testing such as DCISionRT® allows you and your clinical team to make a fully informed decision on your next steps for treatment. If you have any questions regarding this test, please speak with your GenesisCare specialist to see if this test is right for you.
